Pelvic floor and constipation: what nurse practitioners need to know

pelvic floor and constipation
In this week's video you’ll learn about the puborectalis and pubococcygeus muscle and how it relates to constipation.

If you're treating a patient presenting symptoms of constipation, here are some questions you need to ask at intake.

✅ Show patients the Bristol stool chart and have them describe the shape of their BM
✅ Ask about hemorrhoids and fissures
✅ Determine the frequency of BMs
✅ Ask about strain to during BMs and whether they need to push to urinate

Rather than prescribing Miralax or Metamucil, instead try starting with teaching your patients proper toileting. Instruct them on how to release the puborectalis and use diaphragmatic breathing to relax their pelvic floor. This is KEY to allow the muscle to release around the rectum and allow stool to come out.
